Nice bits!

These are nice bits and pieces that I have found on the web, in magazines or simply by word of mouth.

The Art of Alex Trochut

Posted by danieljimenez on 05/11/08

I had the opportunity to attend semipermanent 2008 in Sydney. If  you like typography and illustration, Alex Trochut was the highlight without a doubt! Alex is a Barcelona based designer who specialises in typography.

Alex's inspiration was his grandfather, an enthusiast typographist, in the times when typesetters were designers and image creation was the job of an artist or an illustrator. Alex never met his grandfather but he did find his grandfather's "modular type" system. This is a system where you can create shapes that compose your fonts. Once you have all your elements  you can start playing with combinations - then the possibilities are impressive. See more about his amazing work at www.alextrochut.com/

Pixels or Ems, I finally got it...

Posted by danieljimenez on 05/11/08

I think I got it! ...can I be bothered? I am not sure.  After wondering for a while with the use of ems I seem to finally understand why to use ems. Ems provide accuracy when controlling web typography without sacrificing the user’s ability to adjust his or her reading environment. Even though it's not rocket science, it can definitely get pretty complex in a real life situation.

For that reason I thought there should be an easier way to convert your pixel size fonts into ems... then I found this pixels to ems converter web application. It seems pretty reasonable, even though I haven't tried it yet in a real project I will definitely give it a go! Here are some good resources to understand font size using ems; this is what I have read and I hope it gives a better idea of what the fuss is all about...

I first read this "How to size text using ems", then I read this one "How to Size Text in CSS" and to wrap it all up together I read "Setting Type on the Web to a Baseline Grid". Even though in the last article they don't use ems, you could make it with ems.
